“Today is the day,” I said to myself. The drive to the airport was miserable since all I could think about was going on a plane for the first time. At the airport, we sat in the waiting area where we could see all of the planes. Our plane looked humongous, but the windows looked tiny.
“I get the window seat,” my brother Jack said.
“Fine,” I said in an annoyed voice.
We walked into the tunnel that leads onto the plane. My stomach was doing flips, and I thought I was going to be sick. I noticed that when we walked in the plane it was much longer than I would have imagined. On both sides, there were windows next to each of the rows. The plane had three seats in each row. My mom and Jack were one row ahead of me and my dad, so I could sort of see them but not really well.
When the plane started to take off my hands got sweaty, and the loud, loud, loud engines started to roar. I noticed that outside of the window three men with bright orange suits were holding neon yellow flags up to the sky. Once they put their arms down and the flags to their sides, we were off. The plane started to move forward at the speed of a car driving through town, and then it started to get bumpy. All of the sudden, it felt like we went from 20 to 100 mph in a matter of seconds. I looked out the window and everything was racing by. I was getting more nervous with each passing second. My ears were popping, my hands were sweating, my heart was pounding out of my chest. With all of my strength, I looked out the window and we were off the ground! We went from being perfectly straight, to having the plane tilt backward at what felt like an 80-degree angle. I went from being as nervous as a turkey during Thanksgiving season, to being as fascinated as a kid at Christmas time.
My plan for the plane ride was to just watch movies on my phone or computer and stuff like that, but I just loved watching the plane as it kept rising and rising. The sights were incredible! As we got higher, I started to see geometric patterns on the ground below. I could see houses and buildings, barns and ranches, and even football fields and tennis courts. At that time, I was starting to think to myself “I think this is high enough!” and yet it kept getting higher and higher and higher. After that, we were in the clouds, and I only could see white. In a few more seconds we were above the clouds, and I saw the blue sky again. At that point, the flight attendant announced that we had reached the cruising altitude and that we could unfasten our seatbelts.
I turned to my dad and said, “That was awesome! Why did we wait so long to do this?”
I’m so glad that I got to experience going on a plane, and I sure hope that I can do it again very soon.
