FaR - SPEAKING & LISTENING GUIDELINES
Since literacy skills include speaking and listening, we will be practicing these skills many times throughout the year.
Some schools choose to not work on these skills directly, as they are not "tested." However, since ELA is a class that is all about communication, and Speaking & Listening skills are addressed in the Common Core Standards, we will be addressing them in class.

Class Discussions
In class discussions, you can use this scorecard to see what is expected. Transfer your "score" to your own "Proof of Learning Document." Reflect on what you could do better, and work on those skills for the next class discussion.
On Your Own
Perhaps you'd like to review a book you've read, and you'd like to create a podcast or a vlog... Speaking and listening skills come in very handy here!

Skills - Building a Speech |
Tips... |
Consider these aspects...
A = Audience (understand your listeners) C = Content (make the message valuable) O = Organization (make the speech easy to follow) V = Visual Aids (enhance your words) A = Appearance (dress for the occasion) |
Every time you publish something (your writing for class, a book review, a vlog), consider these three things:
Task - What are you creating? Audience - Who are you creating this for? Purpose - Why are you creating this? |
Skills - Performing a Speech
Consider these aspects...
P = Poise (appear calm and confident)
V = Voice (every word heard and understood)
L = Life (express passion and emotion with your voice - make your message believable)
E = Eye Contact (connect visually with the audience)
G = Gestures (hand motions, body movement, expressive face)
S = Speed (talk with appropriate speed, use pauses for effect and emphasis)
