March. We've had many disruptions to our normal schedule, so we decided it was a good time to try something called "Novel Engineering" (with the help of Mrs. Salsinger) and it's a great time for students to share a short presentation on their talents. Novel Engineering is about finding a problem in your book (we did this in groups, so we used our dystopian novels) and figuring out a solution (most likely tangible) for one of the characters. It was a mess, and it really had students thinking about their characters. We're hoping they were developing empathy for them and will transfer this thinking to their next books.
Revisions to writing were due this week (it's been two weeks since they turned in the writing), and I love all the students that took the chance to revise and improve their writing skills. Next week, while we're starting 1:1 conferences about third quarter grades, students will be giving three-minute presentations on something they love or something they can teach. If we're in school on Monday, ask your child what day and period they're presenting, as you're invited to see!
Of course this schedule was made (and typed) thinking we'd be IN school... Obviously things may change.
Presentations days/times (rough estimates):
Wednesday per 2 - 8:33-8:53 & per 4 - 9:41-10:21
per 5 - 10:45-11:05 & per 6 - 11:09-11:49
per 8 - 1:00-1:17 & per 9 - 1:21-2:01
Thursday per 2 - 8:33-8:53 & per 4 - 9:41-10:21
per 5 - 10:45-11:05 & per 6 - 11:09-11:49
per 8 - 1:00-1:17 & per 9 - 1:21-2:01
Friday per 2 - 9:03-9:20 & per 4 - 10:05-10:42

per 8 - 1:07-1:23 & per 9 - 1:27-2:04
Updates from here on out may be sporadic, but of course you can always email me any time. I'd like to put in yet another plug for students to be reading reading reading over spring break... Voluminous reading is the only thing that has been proven time and time again to boost children's comprehension skills. It also helps them build empathy and socialization skills. We're in serious need of these skills right now. Thank you for reading as a role model and encouraging your child to read as well!
