Woah! Two more weeks flew by already. Last week, we started our first read-aloud - Crash, by Jerry Spinelli. We'll be using this common text to review Notice & Note reading signposts, and perhaps to help us write some narratives of our own. We also read "Thank You M'am" by Langston Hughes, and wrote in response to it. We've been hearing many book talks, so during independent reading time in class, all students have a book! We will often read and then write about our reading, as well.
This past week, we began by hearing about Genius Hour. If you'd like the brief intro, please watch this video. We also read and discussed annotating with "Marginalia" by Billy Collins, "The Names" by Billy Collins (regarding 9/11, and also "A View from a Bridge" by Paul McDonald. Our writing in response to "A View from the Bridge" will be the first writing assignment that is graded. You can see the general rubric we're using to introduce our more specific rubrics on this page. Be aware that on Edline, the grade will say M4 for Mastery (100%), P3 for Proficient (90%), D2 for Developing (75%), and B1 for Beginning (55%). Know that all of our work may be revised & re-graded, and I'm available for your child before school, during lunch, and after school. We ended the week with MAP testing and silent reading today. It was great to see many of you last night at Parent Night!
Below is our first Animoto video for you - just a glimpse of our first three weeks. The others are from each class - your child's strengths, character traits that help him or her with those strengths, and his or her "genius habitudes."
